Built-up bitumen felt is the most common material for residential flat roofs and there has been a lot of product development in recent years. It consists of two or three layers of sheet materials, which are rolled out over the roof and bonded together with hot bitumen.

There are several ways of doing this:

  • Pour and roll: hot bitumen is poured in front of the felt as it is unrolled, and thus acts as the adhesive and seals the laps.
  • Torching: in this method specially designed felt is heated with a gas torch and no separate bonding bitumen is needed.
